Teeth Whitening in Bandra West, Mumbai

Professional whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten the natural shade of teeth. It works on the tooth itself rather than on surface stain, which is what distinguishes it from cleaning. At Bliss Skin & Dental Polyclinic in Bandra West, whitening is preceded by an examination and a clean, because whitening over decay, exposed roots or inflamed gums causes problems and whitening over tartar gives a patchy result.

Benefits of teeth whitening

  • Lightens the natural tooth shade without removing any tooth structure — the most conservative cosmetic option there is
  • Works on staining from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan that has been absorbed into the tooth
  • Custom trays allow top-ups years later at a fraction of the original cost
  • Supervised, so decay, exposed roots and gum problems are found before peroxide is applied
  • A visible change in days rather than months
  • The correct first step before any restoration is shade-matched

Areas treated

  • All visible teeth in both arches
  • Upper front teeth, where the change is most noticeable
  • Lower front teeth, whitened alongside to avoid a mismatch
  • A single dark root-treated tooth, treated internally rather than externally
  • Not restorations — crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour at all

Conditions treated

What whitening can and cannot change

  • Works well on: general yellowing with age, stain from tea, coffee, tobacco and paan absorbed into the tooth, and many mild to moderate intrinsic discolourations
  • Works less predictably on: grey-toned teeth, tetracycline staining, and severe fluorosis
  • Does not work at all on: crowns, veneers, composite fillings and any other restoration. They stay exactly the shade they were made

That last point drives the sequencing of every cosmetic plan. If you have visible restorations at the front, whitening the natural teeth around them will make the restorations look darker by contrast, and they will need replacing to match. You should know the cost of that before you start, not after.

The procedure, step by step

  • Examination and a clean first — whitening over tartar gives a patchy result, and over decay or exposed roots causes problems
  • Shade recorded against a guide and photographed, so the change is measurable afterwards
  • Gums and soft tissues isolated and protected
  • Whitening gel applied in cycles, usually across a single longer appointment
  • Gel removed, shade re-recorded, desensitising agent applied
  • Aftercare instructions for the 48 hours when teeth are most absorbent

Custom-tray home whitening

  • Impressions or a scan taken to make trays that fit your teeth exactly
  • Trays issued with gel and written instructions a few days later
  • Worn at home for the prescribed period daily over one to two weeks
  • Review appointment to check progress and the gums
  • Trays kept for top-ups years later

Downtime and recovery

Sensitivity

Temporary sensitivity to cold is the most common side effect and affects a substantial proportion of patients. It is usually mild and resolves within a few days.

  • Use a desensitising toothpaste for a couple of weeks beforehand if you know you are sensitive
  • Space the sessions out rather than pushing through
  • Avoid very hot and very cold food and drink for a day or two
  • Tell the clinic — the protocol can be adjusted rather than abandoned

Aftercare

  • Avoid strongly coloured food and drink for 48 hours, when teeth are most absorbent
  • No smoking or tobacco during the whitening period, ideally at all
  • Use a straw for tea, coffee and cola afterwards where practical
  • Keep your trays — top-ups are far cheaper than starting again

Results timeline

Commonly one to three years, with wide variation. Tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and paan all shorten it considerably. Top-up sessions with home trays are the usual way to maintain the shade, which is another reason custom trays are worth having even if you start in the chair.

Cost of teeth whitening in Bandra

Bliss does not publish treatment prices. A figure quoted before an assessment is a guess, and a published price goes stale and then misleads. You are given a written estimate after the examination and before treatment starts, and you are told before anything changes.

What the figure reflects:

  • Whether treatment is in-office, custom-tray home whitening, or both
  • The number of in-office sessions or the length of the home course
  • Whether custom trays are included — they are worth having either way, for top-ups
  • Whether an internal whitening procedure is needed for a single dark tooth
  • Whether restorations will need replacing afterwards to match the new shade, which is the cost most people do not anticipate

Teeth whitening compared with the alternatives

Options

In-office whitening

A higher-concentration gel applied in the clinic with the gums protected, usually across a single longer appointment. The fastest visible change. Often marketed as “laser whitening” — the light or laser is an accelerator, and the evidence that it improves the final outcome over the gel alone is not strong. Pay for the gel and the supervision, not the lamp.

Custom-tray home whitening

Trays made to fit your teeth, with a lower-concentration gel used at home over one to two weeks. Slower, usually gives a more even and longer-lasting result, and the trays can be re-used for top-ups years later. For most patients this is the better value.

Combination

An in-office session followed by home trays. Fast initial change plus control over the final shade.

Internal whitening

For a single dark tooth that has had root canal treatment, the gel is placed inside the tooth. A different procedure with a different indication.

Over-the-counter and salon whitening

Whitening strips and toothpastes mostly address surface stain and produce limited shade change. The concern with unsupervised high-concentration products and non-dental salon whitening is gum and soft-tissue burns, uneven results, and whitening carried out over undiagnosed decay or exposed roots. In India the market is largely unregulated, so an examination first is not a formality.

Risks, suitability and important considerations

Who should not have whitening

  • Untreated decay, leaking fillings or active gum disease — treat first
  • Significant exposed root surfaces, which whiten poorly and become very sensitive
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, where it is usually deferred as a precaution
  • Children and adolescents, other than in specific supervised situations
  • Anyone expecting a shade that whitening cannot deliver — that conversation belongs before treatment

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening damage enamel?

Professionally supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations is not shown to cause clinically significant enamel damage. The risks are gum irritation and temporary sensitivity, both of which are why supervision and properly fitting trays matter.

Will my crowns and fillings whiten too?

No. Restorations do not change colour. If you have visible ones at the front, they may need replacing after whitening to match — factor that into the plan and the budget.

How long do results last?

Commonly one to three years, depending heavily on diet, smoking and tobacco or paan use. Home trays make top-ups straightforward.

Is laser whitening better?

The light or laser is an accelerator. The evidence that it improves the final outcome over the gel alone is not strong. The gel and the supervision are what you are paying for.

Why are my teeth sensitive afterwards?

Peroxide temporarily increases the permeability of the tooth. It is common, usually mild, and settles within days. Desensitising toothpaste beforehand helps.

Can I whiten while pregnant?

It is usually deferred as a precaution. There is no strong evidence of harm, but it is elective and can wait.

Are whitening strips from the pharmacy worth it?

They mostly address surface stain and produce limited change. The bigger issue is whitening without an examination, over decay or exposed roots you did not know about.

How white will my teeth actually get?

It varies by starting shade and the cause of the discolouration. You will be given a realistic expectation using a shade guide beforehand rather than a promise.
