Retainers After Braces, Bandra West
A retainer holds teeth in their corrected position after orthodontic treatment. Teeth are held in bone by fibres that have a long memory, and without retention they drift back toward where they started — this is the single most common reason orthodontic results are lost. At Bliss Skin & Dental Polyclinic in Bandra West, retainers are fitted as part of treatment, and replacements and re-treatment are available to patients who had braces elsewhere.
Benefits of retainers after braces
- Holds the result you have already paid for — retention is what protects that investment
- Fixed retainers work without you having to remember anything
- Removable retainers are easy to clean and simple to replace
- Catches small relapse early, while a new retainer is still enough
- Night-time wear only, for most patients, after the initial phase
- Available whether or not your original treatment was carried out here
Areas treated
- Lower front teeth — the commonest site for a bonded retainer, and the region that relapses first
- Upper front teeth — usually a removable clear retainer, sometimes a bonded wire
- Full upper arch and full lower arch, where a removable retainer is used
- Individual teeth that were rotated and are known to be at higher relapse risk
Conditions treated
Why teeth move back
Two things are happening. The periodontal fibres around each tooth were stretched during treatment and pull back toward their original position for a long time afterwards. Separately, teeth drift throughout life regardless of whether you ever had braces — lower front crowding in the thirties is extremely common in people who never had orthodontic treatment at all.
Retention addresses the first and manages the second. The evidence on relapse once retainers stop is consistent enough that retention is treated as part of the treatment plan rather than an optional accessory sold at the end.
The procedure, step by step
How a retainer is made and fitted
- Assessment of the current tooth position and of gum and enamel condition
- A digital scan or impression of both arches
- For a bonded retainer: the wire is contoured and bonded to the back of the teeth at a single appointment
- For a removable retainer: laboratory manufacture over a few days, then a fit appointment with adjustment
- Wear instructions given in writing, because the schedule is the treatment
- A review to confirm fit and that the teeth have not moved in the interval
Downtime and recovery
Looking after a retainer
- Clean daily. Cold water and a soft brush — hot water distorts clear retainers permanently.
- Keep it in its case, not in a napkin. Napkins get thrown away.
- Do not attempt to adjust a wire yourself.
- If it suddenly feels tight, your teeth have started to move. Wear it more, and call the clinic — do not force it.
- If it cracks, breaks or a bonded wire lifts, book promptly. A few weeks without retention is enough for noticeable movement.
Results timeline
In some form, indefinitely, if the result is to hold. Wear is usually reduced from full-time to nights after the first phase, and for many patients night wear a few times a week is enough long-term. Anyone who tells you retention is finished after six months is telling you what you want to hear.
Cost of retainers after braces in Bandra
Bliss does not publish treatment prices. A figure quoted before an assessment is a guess, and a published price goes stale and then misleads. You are given a written estimate after the examination and before treatment starts, and you are told before anything changes.
What the figure reflects:
- Whether the retainer is fixed, removable, or both arches
- The retainer type — clear thermoplastic, Hawley or bonded wire
- Whether it is a first retainer, a replacement or a repair
- Whether any relapse needs correcting before a retainer will fit
- Laboratory costs for the removable types
Retainers after braces compared with the alternatives
Types of retainer
Fixed (bonded) retainers
A thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. It works without you having to remember anything, which is its main advantage. It requires careful cleaning with floss threaders or interdental brushes, and it can debond silently — which is why reviews matter.
Removable clear retainers
A transparent tray worn to a prescribed schedule, usually full-time briefly and then nights indefinitely. Easy to clean, easy to lose, and only works if worn.
Hawley retainers
An acrylic plate with a visible wire across the front teeth. More durable and adjustable than clear trays, more noticeable.
Many patients end up with a fixed retainer on the lower teeth and a removable one on the upper. The combination is decided case by case.
Risks, suitability and important considerations
My teeth have already moved. What now?
This is common, and it is worth an assessment rather than resignation. Depending on how much movement has occurred, options range from a new retainer that holds the current position, through a short course of aligners to recover the previous alignment, to full re-treatment. Records tell you which. Minor relapse caught early is a much smaller problem than minor relapse ignored for five years.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to wear a retainer?
In some form, indefinitely. Wear usually reduces to nights after the initial phase. Teeth drift throughout life, with or without previous orthodontic treatment.
What happens if I stop wearing it?
The teeth gradually move. How fast and how far varies, but the direction is consistent, and the review evidence on this is clear.
Fixed or removable — which is better?
Fixed works without you remembering; removable is easier to clean. Many patients have both, on different arches. It depends on the case.
I lost my retainer. Does it matter?
Yes, and sooner rather than later. A few weeks without retention is enough for noticeable movement. Book a replacement.
My retainer suddenly feels tight.
That means the teeth have started to shift. Wear it more and call the clinic. Do not force it on.
I had braces years ago elsewhere and my teeth have moved. Can you help?
Yes. An assessment will tell you whether a new retainer, a short aligner course or fuller re-treatment is appropriate.
Can I get a retainer without having had braces?
Retainers hold a position; they do not create one. If your teeth have drifted and you want them straighter, that is orthodontic treatment, not retention.
Who carries out this treatment
Orthodontic treatment at Bliss is planned and carried out by Dr. Farhan Parkar, BDS, MDS (Orthodontics), Maharashtra State Dental Council A-18082. An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional three-year full-time postgraduate specialisation in moving teeth and correcting jaw relationships — his was at Manipal, completed in 2013.
That distinction matters here. Orthodontic treatment carried out as a general-practice add-on and orthodontic treatment planned by a specialist are not the same service, however similar the appliance looks.
