Stretch marks or striae are a type of an off-color hue of linear marks on the skin. Tearing of the second layer of skin known as the dermis triggers them. They may decrease in time over time, but usually they will not completely disappear.

Stretch marks initially appear as longitudinal lines of reddish or purple, but begin to fade progressively to a lighter range. There is a light and supple feel in the affected regions. They are typically not painful, but they can itch occasionally.

Stretch marks on the body can occur anywhere. The abdomen (especially near the navel), breasts, upper arms, underarms, back, thighs (both inner and outer), hips, and buttocks are among the most common areas that occur.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF STRETCH MARKS?

Stretch marks are also the result of development or rapid weight changes associated with rapid skin stretching. Hormonal changes that occur with puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, hormone replacement therapy, etc., can also affect them.

Stretch marks can be produced by 70% of teenage girls and 40 percent of teenage boys. They are caused by skin stretching tension, which releases substances that destroy proteins in the skin and are often seen during growth spurts in children, pregnant women, and people who are overweight. Stretch marks may also be caused either by orally administered steroid drugs or by topically used strong steroids on the skin. They are occasionally triggered when abnormally large quantities of steroids are released by the body, in a condition known as Cushing’s syndrome.
