Dental Crowns in Bandra West, Mumbai

Dental Crowns in Bandra - Dr. Farhan Parkar at Bliss Dental Clinic

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth entirely, restoring its shape and protecting it from fracture. It is most often needed after root canal treatment, after a large filling has left too little tooth structure, or where a tooth has cracked. At Bliss Skin & Dental Polyclinic in Bandra West, the material is chosen for the position and function of the tooth rather than by default, and the alternatives — including doing less — are set out first.

Benefits of dental crowns

  • Protects a weakened or root-treated tooth from splitting, which is how most of these teeth are eventually lost
  • Restores full chewing function to a heavily broken-down tooth
  • Holds a cracked tooth together
  • Restores shape, alignment and appearance in one restoration
  • Modern ceramics match natural teeth closely
  • Commonly lasts ten to fifteen years or considerably longer with good hygiene

Areas treated

  • Molars and premolars — the highest chewing load, and where crowns most often follow root canal treatment
  • Front teeth, where appearance governs the material choice
  • Teeth supporting a bridge at either end of a gap
  • Implant-supported crowns
  • Heavily worn teeth in patients who grind

Conditions treated

When a crown is needed

  • After root canal treatment on a back tooth, where fracture risk is real
  • Where a tooth is so heavily filled that the remaining walls are unlikely to survive
  • A cracked tooth, to hold it together
  • Severe wear from grinding or acid erosion
  • On top of a dental implant
  • As part of a bridge
  • Occasionally for appearance on front teeth, though a veneer or bonding is often more conservative

A crown requires removing tooth structure all the way round, which cannot be undone. Where a smaller restoration would do the job, it is the better answer.

The procedure, step by step

Preparation

Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. An impression or digital scan is taken, the shade matched, and a temporary crown fitted.

Laboratory stage

The crown is made to fit that specific preparation and bite.

Fitting

The temporary is removed and the crown tried in, checking fit, contacts, bite and appearance before it is cemented. Anything that is not right should be corrected before cementation, not after.

Downtime and recovery

Looking after a crown

  • Brush and clean between the teeth as normal — the crown will not decay but the tooth underneath it can, at the margin
  • Avoid biting very hard objects; ceramic chips
  • Wear a night guard if you grind
  • Attend reviews so the margin and the gum can be checked

Results timeline

  • Appointment 1: preparation under local anaesthetic, impression or scan, temporary crown fitted
  • Days 1–7: some sensitivity while the temporary is in place; avoid heavy chewing on that side
  • Roughly 1–2 weeks: laboratory manufacture
  • Appointment 2: try-in, checks for fit, contacts, bite and appearance, then cementation
  • Days after fitting: brief sensitivity, then normal function
  • Long term: reviews at routine appointments to check the margin and the gum

Dental crowns compared with the alternatives

Material options

Zirconia

Very strong and tooth-coloured. The usual choice for back teeth and for patients who grind. Monolithic zirconia is the toughest; layered zirconia looks more natural but is slightly more prone to chipping.

All-ceramic (lithium disilicate)

The best appearance, particularly for front teeth where translucency matters. Strong enough for most front-tooth and many premolar situations.

Metal-ceramic (PFM)

A metal substructure with ceramic fired over it. Durable and long-established. The metal margin can show as a dark line at the gum over time, especially if gums recede.

Full metal

Extremely durable and needs the least tooth removal, but obviously visible. Still a sensible choice for a back molar in a heavy grinder.

Risks, suitability and important considerations

Risks and limitations

  • Sensitivity after preparation, usually settling
  • Occasionally the tooth later needs root canal treatment, because preparation is an insult to an already compromised pulp
  • Chipping or fracture of ceramic
  • Decay at the margin if cleaning is neglected
  • Gum recession exposing the margin over the years
  • Crowns do not last forever and will need replacing at some point

Frequently asked questions

How long do crowns last?

Many last ten to fifteen years or considerably longer with good hygiene and no grinding. They are not permanent and will eventually need replacing.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity afterwards is normal while the temporary is in place.

Which material is best?

It depends on the tooth. Zirconia for strength at the back, all-ceramic for appearance at the front, metal-ceramic as a durable middle ground. There is no single best.

Do I really need a crown after a root canal?

On a back tooth, almost always. Root-treated molars are brittle and are usually lost to fracture rather than re-infection. The crown is what prevents that.

Can a crown decay?

The crown cannot, but the tooth beneath it can decay at the margin where crown meets tooth. Cleaning that junction is essential.

Crown or veneer for a front tooth?

A veneer removes far less tooth and is preferable where the tooth is largely sound. A crown is needed where the tooth is heavily broken down or root-treated.

Will it match my other teeth?

Shade is matched at the preparation appointment and checked before cementation. A single crown next to natural front teeth is the hardest match in dentistry and is worth taking time over.
